Meet the Chef: Rachel Klein

Meet the Chef: Rachel Klein

Chef Rachel Klein, formerly of Liquid Art House, will be opening a new spot called RFK Kitchen in Needham, MA later this spring. We caught up with her to chat about a few of her recipes for home chefs, and about her new place.

Tell me about RFK Kitchen - what can we expect from a place with your initials on the door? RK
“I’m going for "comfort chic" - a neighborhood place you can go to more than once a week. We’ll feature a 20-seat counter facing the open kitchen, with options for families or foodies. When you’re in the suburbs, serving families is really important. Our kids menu will feature a take on bento boxes, with a mix-and-match format.”

I know you have two young kids. As a chef, what are the challenges of cooking at home for your family?
“People think, "Oh, you’re a chef, your kids must eat so well.” But really, I’m a working parent, I just cook for a living. I don’t really want to cook when I get home; and yes, I use my microwave!”

“We eat out pretty often, and when we’re home I want healthy, easy, interesting, quick to create just like any other parent. Just like in my restaurants, I focus on good products, and when I shop for meat I look for no added hormones, no antibiotics, good animal welfare, and all-natural. All of those attributes are what I like about Australian lamb, too.”

OK, time for Aussie fun facts. What’s your favorite Australian animal?
“My kids are always learning about animals, and lately it’s been all about sharks and the “Ten Deadliest Animals in the World." So let’s go with Great White Sharks, or Tasmanian Devils.”

Favorite Australian actor or actress?
“Hugh Jackman. He’s hot. And so multi-talented! We also like Iggy Azalea around here.”
